3 Tips on choosing your Virtual Race Distance

The fun starts in choosing your challenge!

As we continue to revolutionize the Philippine running scene for the past 2 years, the whole Virtual Race community has grown at a steady rate and has produced enthusiasts that comes from a more diverse demographics.

With this growth, we find it necessary to provide a sort of education to everyone to make each Virtual Race event more enjoyable and equally challenging.

As we described on an earlier post, VirtualRacePH runners experience unique categories each event. Unlike most Virtual Race events in the country, runners are not treated to the same distance and duration for every event.

Given this variation, how does a runner correctly choose a distance that will be doable, yet challenging? Here are 3 tips:

1. Measure by weekly mileage.

Since not all VirtualRacePH events last for 30 days, it will be incorrect to always divide the target distance by 4, pertaining to number of weeks per month. For example, for Phoenix Rising, we have 165km as the highest distance to be completed in 3 weeks. This means that it requires an average weekly mileage of 55km. In contrast with Spartan Challenge’s 165km, to be completed in 31 days, which requires a lower weekly average mileage of 41km.

2. Sync with your training plan.

For those training for major races (say, Milo Marathon), you may schedule your Virtual Race events according to your training plan. If you have plotted your mileage plan and have seen that a certain month with a Virtual Race event coincides with your peak mileage, then it will be helpful to level up your category from the usual average mileage to push yourself and achieve those target mileage!

3. Plan  loosely and set some buffer.

I have seen some people filling up calendars with their mileage plan, listing the daily target kms on a notebook, etc… But as good as our plan is, there are things we cannot control like a sudden weather disturbance, unplanned work commitments, and other stuff that would make us miss those target mileage that we set. My advice in creating such mileage plan is to plan loosely. Do not create a mileage plan that even you would find impossible to achieve. Can you really do back-to-back LSDs? Triple 10km? Daily 10kms? What if you planned a daily 10km and you suddenly overslept on the 4th day? Could you make up for it with a 20km the next day? These are just some points to consider. Always leave some room for risks. Anyway, even in organized races,  you would not sign up for a 50km ultramarathon, knowing that you can only run up to 45km… and knowing full well that our generous RDs usually have “bonus” kilometers for their ultrarunners.
